Matched Glass-to-Metal Seals

Matched glass-to-metal seals are hermetic seals in which
the Coefficients of Thermal Expansion (CTE) of the header
and the electrodes are the same. In a matched seal, hermeticity
is achieved by means of a chemical bond between the glass and
a precisely grown oxide formed on the metal components.

• Typical Materials In matched glass-to-metal seals, both the header and the pins are usually made of Kovar, though tungsten and molybdenum are sometimes used for particular applications. Special glass designed for Kovar sealing is often used in matched seals, and parts are typically gold-plated (if Kovar) in a final manufacturing step.

• Advantages Matched seals typically exhibit good temperature stability and electrical characteristics, as well as being lighter in overall weight.

• Common Applications Matched seals are particularly useful in ultra-precise applications such as those in the microwave and laser industries, and other applications requiring very small-diameter pins. Typical applications include flat packs, dual in-line packages (DIPs), and hybrid packages.
