GLASS-TO-METAL SEALS:

Concept is capable of manufacturing a full line of Glass-to-Metal Compression, Matched, Combination, and Proprietary seals for transistor packages, quartz crystal packages, photodiode housings, hybrid packages, diode housings, battery and power feed-troughs, sensor packages, microwave packages, transducer packages, as well as highly custom designs. Typical applications include aerospace, defense, sensors, opto-electronics, telecommunications, automotive electronics, and power electronics.

With Concept’s compression, matched, combination, and proprietary seal processes, we offer our customers excellent electrical insulation, high hermeticity, pressure resistance, corrosion resistance, solderability, easy final assembly, and customization.

Concept’s compression seals are created by utilizing header/body materials with Coefficients of Thermal Expansion (CTE) that greatly exceed that of both the glass and electrodes. The external metal component shrinks around the glass during cooling to form a compression ring around the glass. Typical materials include Steel, Inconel, and Stainless Steel bodies with 52 Alloy, Copper Cored 52 Alloy, 42 Alloy, etc. electrodes. Typical compression seals will withstand extreme temperatures, in some cases -450F to 840F (-270C to 450C) with no loss in integrity.

Matched seals are those in which the CTE of the metal components and glass are similar. A matched seal is made by forming a chemical bond between the glass and an oxide created on a metal component and has the advantage of lighter weight. Typical bodies are made of Kovar, Tungsten, and Molybdenum.

Combination and proprietary seals utilize mixed materials and proprietary surface treatments and can be customized to nearly any customer requirement. Contact Concept Group, Inc. to discuss your particular application.

Electrical Properties and Hermeticity:

Concept provides complete electrical and leak testing on its seals. Electrical testing includes insulation resistance and Hypot/breakdown testing between 1 and 1000V. Although typical insulation resistances are between 100 mega ohms to 100 giga-ohms, tera-ohm resistances are possible. Breakdown voltages vary with seal design but can be estimated at 55VDC per radial 0.001” of glass between header and electrode.
Concept employs helium mass spectrometer leak detectors to ensure hermeticity of its seals. We guarantee our seals will be hermetic to 1.0 X 10-8 std cc/sec He.
Typically, our Glass-to-Metal seals test between 1.0 x 10-9 and 1.0 X 10-10 std cc/sec He and higher.

Finish and Plating:

Virtually any single or multi-layer plating scheme is available. The most common requirements are Electroless Ni, Electrolytic Ni, Pure Gold, Hard Gold, Silver, Tin, Copper, etc. Concept utilizes in-house plating capability for many of its applications to ensure consistent quality and quick delivery.
