Ceramic Hermetic Seals

Ceramic seals are hermetic seals in which the seal is
formed by brazing a low-expansion, metalized ceramic
feedthrough to both the header and the electrode.

• Typical Materials Ceramic hermetic seals typically are manufactured using cold-rolled steel headers, iron-nickel alloy or copper electrodes, and alumina oxide seals.

• Advantages While generally more expensive than other seals, ceramic seals have both high mechanical and thermal strength; in fact, they provide the strongest mechanical seal of all the various types of hermetic seals. In addition, they provide excellent electrical insulation.

• Common Applications Ceramic hermetic seals are particularly well suited to harsh environments, such as those found under the sea or in space, or applications involving chemical exposure. These products are currently used in military, space, and petrochemical applications, and have considerable potential in the medical implant market, as well.
